ChatGPT is Writing My Book: Is it really possible to write an entire book using artificial intelligence?

The short answer is yes! But the real question is will the book be any good? Well, it’s too soon to say, but my results have been promising so far. The first few chapters are done and dusted, and I’ve decided to start sharing it with you, piece by piece.

It’s not perfect, I know. But the plan, for now, is to regurgitate the entire first book that’s in my head using ChatGPT and various other AI chatbots like Bard and Pi as my muse and ghostwriters.

If you’re planning on trying this, here are a few tips I’ve nailed down so far.

  1. Chat with a person, not a tool. What I mean by this, and as creepy as this sounds, is that I get better results when I pretend like I’m chatting with a real person. I even give compliments after the AI writes a section that I like. But on the flip side, I find it easier to write for long periods of time when it’s an enjoyable conversation, rather than a strict order, command, and [ Enter ].
  2. Explain in detail what you like; be honest. To find a writing style I like, I try and explain the kinds of things I enjoy reading, everything from comic books to sci-fi novels. I try to feed the AI different details for different parts of the book to generate a variety of things to choose from. It’s the ultimate creative direction.
  3. Have the bigger picture in mind. As amazing as AI can be at learning from your chat, it’s far from grasping the bigger picture. I’ve had a few times where the AI gets characters confused and mixes up details that I thought were already baked into our conversation sessions — I was wrong. It’s impossible for the AI to remember everything we planned for and laid out, no matter how detailed and specific I get. I still need to have the bigger idea in mind as the writing unfolds. I do find it funny when I have to correct the AI, and it apologizes for forgetting things.
  4. Be patient. I won’t lie; the majority of things the AI writes are crap—real dustbin material. But with enough trial and error, I’ve started to get usable results.

If you’re interested in reading my sci-fi series, it’s called AI Genesis, and the first part is up for public scrutiny.

Good luck with your creative writing with ChatGPT; it’s hella fun.
